Digital Eye Strain: A Growing Issue

What causes “Digital Eye Strain”?
We spend a large part of our day looking at screens, whether it’s a computer, tablet, smart phone or television. This causes us to strain our eyes.
Excessive use of electronic devices has created an increase in vision problems such as dry eyes. The main reason for this problem is that we aren’t blinking as much when we’re looking at digital screens. Our blink rate tends to decrease up to 47% when you are staring at our screens compared to normal blinking.
What is Blue Light?
The term “blue light” refers to high-energy visible blue light (HEV), which has similar frequencies and wavelengths to UV radiation.
Because your eyes are under a lot of strain due to the blue light, you’re prone to eye discomfort. According to research, excessive exposure to blue light causes an increased risk of macular degeneration and disrupted sleep cycles. In another study conducted in July 2015 and published in the Free Radical Biology and Medicine journal, the more frequent exposure to blue-light-emitting LED lights generates free radicals in the eye, which also causes retinal damage. This may cause eye aging and vision issues in people who are younger.
Sleep Disruption
After dark, blue light may disrupt our circadian rhythm by suppressing melatonin production. Blue light tricks the brain into thinking it’s daytime, making it more difficult to fall asleep and lowering overall sleep quality. Disruptions in the circadian cycle can lead to significant long-term health issues.
